The monument for Sylvia Jessie Katherine Birdseye was erected to perpetuate and acknowledge her outstanding service. Sylvia introduced overland mail and passenger bus services between Adelaide and the Eyre Peninsula in 1928. It is estimated that Sylvia drove over 4 million miles in 43 years. The Birdseye Highway, Cleve is named after her.
