Ben Ungermann won fans across Australia as one of the stars of the 2017 Masterchef series. But it wasn’t only here that he found fame after finishing runner-up in the finale.
Ben is Ipswich born and bred but has Dutch heritage and garnered a following in The Netherlands, as well as India, South Africa and beyond.
He visited them on a 2018 world tour, while sourcing ideas for a cookbook, but it's Ipswich he still calls home and where he and brother Danny run the family business, Ungermann Brothers Ice-cream Parlour.
Tucked into the 88 Limestone heritage precinct, this sweet spot offers flavours you won’t find anywhere else. There’s a strawberry balsamic sorbet and lavender honeycomb. Pumpkin seed was an early favourite, along with coffee cardamom and lime and coconut. A Dutch spice offering is based on traditional speculaas.
Watch out for seasonal flavours such as carrot cake or blue cheese and fig. You can order ice cream in a cone or cup, or go all out and try the tasting plate of three flavours styled up in the manner of Masterchef creation.
